BATS
You may be familiar with an old bat you played with in your younger days, on holiday or at a youth club. This was probably a piece of wood with a couple of 'pimples out' rubbers stuck on, usually peeling away in places.
Technology has moved on with bat design and there are now thousands of bat combinations available. The better players will use a bat where they have actually bought the wooden bit [blade] and the two rubbers separately and glued them on. These two rubbers must be differing colours, for reasons I will explain, and are usually red on one side of the bat and black on the other.
The choice of blades and rubbers is vast and depending on your style and ability will influence your choice. Some are very fast, others generate huge spin whilst others give more control. Some players will spend £200 or more just on a blade with a further £100 or more on rubbers. The rubbers can be from different manufacturers and be of contrasting types, the red/ black combination helps the opponent see which side of the bat was used to strike the ball.
Have a look online and and see the choice available at somewhere like Bribar.
